About Us

Café Nullpunkt was built on the exact spot where the planet Neptune was seen for the first time on September 23rd,1846 – a world wide sensation!

The Berliner Sternwarte (planetarium), which stood on this site until 1912 was designed by the famous 19th century architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, for the Prussian monarch Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1835. The benchmark for the Prussian Elevation Survey was installed on the northern corner, at the height of 37,00 m above sea level. The name Café Nullpunkt is a reference to this historic function.

Café Nullpunkt is part of Frizz23, Germany’s first Baugruppe so-operative for cultural workspaces. The building has won many prizes for its unique participatory approach and striking design, including being a finalist in the EU Mies van der Rohe Award. The architects of the building, deadline.de, run Café Nullpunkt, and the 14 Minilofts above it. The Café interior was built entirely by the Miniloft team in dialogue with the architects. This D.I.Y. process is explained in detail in a small exhibition in the basement.
